The Vice President is elected on a ticket with the President, and together they are responsible for setting policy for the country.
In the event of the president being unable to act in his duties, due to illness or death, the vice-president assumes temporary presidential powers. The twenty-fifth amendment of the constitution states that a president may temporarily transfer his responsibilities to the vice-president. In the case of the death of the president, the vice president automatically assumes the role of commander in chief.
