Dadra and Nagar Haveli is the smallest union territory in India yet it retains a rich heritage. The region has a history that stretches back to ancient times and was a part of various empires. The Portuguese arrived in 1537 and captured the region from its ruler, Sultan Daud Khan, renaming it “Portuguese India”. It later became part of the British Empire.
Nagar Haveli is situated in between two Indian states, Maharashtra and Gujarat to the northwest. Inside this state is the smaller para-state of Dadra, which has its own administrative headquarters located in Silvassa.
